Guggenheim, Bilbao
The Guggenheim in Bilbao was designed by American architect Frank Gehry and represents an extraordinary example of some of the most groundbreaking architecture of the 20th century. It sits on a large site overlooking the Nervion River and forms an integral part of the cultural aspects of the town.
The external facades are mainly a mixture of silver metal, glass and stone. The metal cladding reflects the light to give an ever changing display of colour and internally the flowing shapes of the walls create an organic feel to the structure. The building is as important a work of art, as the objects it houses.
My initial visit, backed up by photographs, inspired me to try paint the effects of light and reflection both on and through glass. I have visited the Guggenheim several times now and each time I come back with more images – and more inspiration.
